Oral Appliances
Oral breathing devices are a common remedy for snoring and sleep apnea. Worn while sleeping, these custom dental devices change the position of the jaw and suppress the tongue, which enlarges the airway.
Benefits of Oral Appliances
By reducing the chance of blockage in the throat, these devices can be very effective in treating problem snoring and mild sleep apnea. Since they don’t require any surgery or medical procedures, these devices are also relatively inexpensive.
Limitations of Oral Appliances
Many dentists and sleep centers use oral devices as their “first line” therapy. However, we have found that many patients find them uncomfortable, and others have experienced jaw pain, shifting of the teeth or other side effects.
Our Recommendations
As such, we reserve their use for patients who cannot be adequately treated with minimally invasive treatments, or for those seeking a lower cost treatment.
